Hello,
Where are you today?

Feeling Overwhelmed by Building a Website

Setting up a website can feel intimidating, especially if you’re not tech-savvy. People often say, “Oh, it’s easy,” but it rarely feels that way at the start.

A few years ago — well, more like twenty — a friend suggested I learn HTML and start making websites for people. I discarded the idea, sure I was too “stupid” for that kind of adventure. Today I know I’m not stupid, and I can learn anything I set my mind to — though some things still take more time and energy than I’d like.

Have you ever wondered why learning some skills feels so much harder than others?

Why Learning Tech Can Feel Scary

Observing myself and others, I noticed a pattern: if you have time to build basic skills in an accepting environment — one that allows mistakes, encourages play, and supports growth — bigger, more complicated projects suddenly feel exciting.

But if there are gaps in your knowledge, even small ones, a new challenge can feel overwhelming. For me, that challenge is the IT world — specifically, how to make a website.

What Is WordPress?

Some time ago, a few clever developers created WordPress, a framework-like structure that lets you build websites without starting from scratch.

WordPress is a content management system (CMS). In simple terms, it’s a platform that lets you manage and display content on your website, providing a stable foundation to build upon.

Think of it like a house: you don’t have to carve every brick or hammer every beam yourself. WordPress gives you the structure — the walls, roof, and beams — so you can focus on filling the rooms with your furniture, art, and personal touches.

Why So Many People Use WordPress

WordPress started as a tool for bloggers, but it has evolved dramatically. Today, there are tens of thousands of themes, over 30,000 free options, and countless plugins that let you add features without touching code.

Other CMS platforms exist too — for example, Shopify is a CMS focused on online shops. It gives users the tools to set up and manage a store quickly. WordPress, by contrast, is flexible: it can host a blog, a portfolio, a small business website, or even an online shop with the right plugins.

How WordPress Themes Shape Your Website

Choosing WordPress is not the same as choosing the look of your site — that comes next, with themes.

A WordPress theme is like the floor plan, décor, and style of your house. It defines how your site looks and feels, while WordPress itself handles the structure and functionality behind the scenes.

The huge variety of themes available means almost anyone can find a design that fits their needs — from minimalist portfolios to vibrant business websites.

Next Steps: Picking a Theme

Exploring WordPress themes is where the fun begins. You’ll see how your website can grow from a stable structure into something uniquely yours. I’ll talk more about choosing the right theme in next week’s article.

Even if the technical side feels overwhelming, WordPress gives you a framework to experiment, play, and grow — all without having to be an expert from day one.

Lots of love,
Ewa

P.S. Did you know?

When Matt and Mike released the first version of WordPress in 2003, many people were skeptical. Year after year, critics predicted it would fail. Yet here we are today — with an enormous ecosystem of themes, plugins, and a thriving community. Cool, isn’t it?
